The Cabinet held a genetic modification

The Cabinet has increased the level of allowable content of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food from 0.1% to 0.9%. Products in which this level is reached, marking shall be either removed from circulation. Proceed to the labeling of products manufacturers are required to have in July. Meanwhile, the Cabinet discusses the phased introduction of mandatory labeling of products containing GMOs.

As it became known that the July 1, the Cabinet approved changes to the ordinance number 468 of 13 May on the introduction of labeling of foods containing GMOs. As reported yesterday, the first vice-chairman of All-Ukrainian Environmental League Tatiana Timochko, limit the content of GMOs in food production, which does not require labeling, increased to 0.9%. Food, in which the norm is exceeded, must contain the required mark on the presence of GMOs.

Remember, the decision on mandatory labeling of products containing GMOs, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted on 13 May. According tothe document, the limit concentration of SIV was 0.1%. Since July 1, products containing GMOs, without a corresponding marks should be removed from circulation.

As reported by Tatiana Timochko, to increase the allowable content of GMOs is recommended by experts of the organization. The European Union's 0.9% rule implies that producers of GMO inadvertently contributed to the food when you use or transportation of raw materials. And the content of GMOs above the threshold considered to be intentional in order to make a profit, - she explained.

It should be noted that on 18 June at a meeting with representatives of the food industry, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko agreed with the proposal to extend the deadline for the introduction of mandatory labeling on 1 January 2010.

reason for this decision was the lack of the required number of laboratories testing food products for GMO content, and the inability to comply in a timely manner all the requirements of the Cabinet regarding the product labeling. But on Wednesday the Cabinet of Ministers in fact upheld the decision on the introduction of the marking from 1 July.

However, as reported Tatiana Timochko, July 1 at a government meeting, a proposal the Ministry of Economy of the phased introduction of the marking. Under the proposal, prior to August 1 shall be labeled 20% of the production of each producer, before 1 November - 50%, and by 1 January 2010 - 100%. However, as it became known Комерсант-Ukraine, the issue was not resolved.

However, agricultural producers feared complications associated with the marking. To determine the percentage of GMO content in a product, the manufacturer will have to apply to a special lab, - explained the President of Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation Leonid Kozachenko. In doing so, according to his estimation, there are tens of thousands of manufacturers. In this case, it is not important to label them with only 20% of the products or 100%: the laboratory must be in each field, - said Kozachenko.

Recall, according to the Gospotrebstandarta in Ukraine now has five laboratories testing food products for GMO content. Last week, President Viktor Yushchenko has instructed the Cabinet on 1 September to establish a network of such laboratories. In Gospotrebstandarte then told that in Ukraine there should be no less than 15.

Meanwhile, on 1 July the management of veterinary police MIA has already begun to check the availability of labeling, indicating the presence of GMOs in food. As the Deputy Director of Public Relations and international activities of the MIA Gennadij Grebnev, officials conducted raids among entrepreneurs, but the removal of the goods is not involved. Police just issued an address weaknesses, and in case of failure to apply to other regulatory authorities, - explained Grebnev.
